This is a denarius from the reign of Maximinus I (Thrax). Maximinus Thrax was the only Roman emperor never to visit Rome, though he was eventually killed by his own troops and his severed head was sent to the capital. As a result, several portraits on his coinage were produced by the Roman mint artists, who had never seen him in person and had to imagine his appearance. This early portrait shows an imagined depiction and it is only the later coinage that show his prominent forehead and jutting chin. He is believed to have suffered from gigantism and was said to have been exceptionally tall, strong and imposing.
The reverse shows Providentia standing, holding a wand over a globe and a cornucopia. The Providentia reverse was used to project the idea of imperial foresight and stability during a turbulent reign.
